Comedy Comes To Pacifica

WEDNESDAYS & SUNDAYS:
ALL-STAR COMEDY NIGHTS AT THE OCTOPUS LOUNGE

Paul Borne is Pacifica’s Octopus Lounge new owner and he promises to give this traditional bar a different look, a new attitude and a lot of laughter every Wednesday and Sunday evenings at 9:00 p.m. this November & December. Borne bought the Octopus Lounge with a comedy club in mind. He is a former Airborne Ranger and became addicted to comedy during his time in the First Ranger Battalion. “I fell in love with comedy in the military,” he said. “That was when I decided I wanted to open a club that featured really fine comedians, the kind that didn’t have to pull the race card or the sex card to find stuff that is funny.”
When he was in the army, Borne spent all his free time at the Lake Ontario Playhouse because the place featured big name comedians doing exceptionally funny material. “Our battalion was like the world police. We helped people who couldn’t help themselves. I was doing such an intense job, that those shows were a wonderful release for me,” he said. “When I heard that The Octopus was being sold, it was too good an opportunity to pass up. And when I saw the empty space next door, that decided me. ‘I’m going to go for it,’ I told myself.
”I decided to follow my dream to create a comedy club on the coast because I didn’t want to look back at my life and regret that I hadn’t given it a try.”
Borne’s plan is to expand the current Octopus Lounge into a 500 seat comedy club featuring national comedians every week, but that plan is in the future. For now, he is concentrating on bringing the finest Bay Area Comedy to Pacifica for no more than $10.00 admission every Wednesday and Sunday nights in November and December.
The Grand Opening Showcase will be Sunday November 1 at 9 p.m. headlining Michael Meehan who was featured on the Craig Ferguson Show and on Last Comic Standing. Joining him will be Anthony Hill who appeared on national television with Jay Leno and Conan O’Brian for NBC’s Smiles per Gallon series. Hill is hailed as one of the fastest rising stars of the Bay Area Comedy Scene.
Pacifica’s own Lynn Ruth Miller will keep the laughs going. Miller hosts two local TV programs PAINT WITH LYNN & WHAT’S HOT BETWEEN THE COVERS. She has won numerous awards for her comedy including The Branson Comedy Festival’s People’s Choice, the finals in California’s Funniest Female Contest and the semi-finals in San Francisco’s International Comedy competition. Kurt Weitzmann, who just returned from The Vancouver Comedy Festival and Nick Leonard who has made Pacificans laugh numerous times at The Chit Chat Café and hosts his own comedy show, Q Comedy round out the program.
Wednesday, November 4, also at 9 p.m. Borne is featuring Mike Moto. In the ten years Moto's worked as a comic, he has performed in bars in the Midwest, appearing on stage after fist fights over the football table and college campuses throughout the country. He appeared in major US comedy clubs, on HBO and at Seattle's Comedy Underground. He's also been featured on Showtime, on "Showtime's Funniest Person."
Appearing with Moto is a Pacifica favorite, Bob Johnston who mixes blue collar comedy with the high tech world and never fails to win over audiences. Nancy Lee, who charmed Pacifica at the Sharp Park comedy Show last July. Lee loves writing jokes and being real. “Don’t ever tell a girl she looks healthy,” she warns. “She will interpret that as a nice way of saying she is FAT.”
Lynn Ruth Miller will be hosting that show.
Other comedians on our roster are Michael Slack, perpetual hapless hero, regarded by his peers as one of the sharpest writers and quickest wits in the business. Thoughtful, adept, engaging -- his intelligent observations and natural rapport make him a constant crowd favorite. In weeks to come, you will see Pacifica favorites like Ross Turner, Mickey Joseph and Fred Anderson.
If you like to laugh, the Octopus Lounge is your spot. Sundays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m., $10 to get in the place and the promise of endless chuckles with the best The Bay Area has to offer.
